JPSM Seminar Series- Brown Bag

Speaker: Scott F. Clement - Polling Manager - Washington Post

Election polls and forecasts were omnipresent during the 2016 presidential campaign, but were faulted for not predicting Donald Trump's victory. While final tallies show national surveys were broadly accurate in estimating Clinton's 2.1-point popular vote win, polls across key states tended to underestimate Trump's support. This seminar will discuss the accuracy of national and state polls, theories and evidence for causes of survey errors and implications for media coverage of election polls in the future.
