UMD's National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) is pleased to present the book launch of The Three Pillars of Radicalization: Needs, Narratives, and Networks,” with an event featuring a panel discussion among authors Arie Kruglanski, Jocelyn Belanger and Rohan Gunaratna.

A keynote address will be given by the Honorable Juan Zarate, who is the chairman and co-founder of the Financial Integrity Network (FIN), Chairman of the Center on Economic and Financial Power (CEFP), and a Visiting Lecturer in Law at the Harvard Law School. He was previously the deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for combatting terrorism and was the first-ever assistant secretary of the Treasury for terrorist financing and financial crimes.

Light refreshments will be served.

Provost Mary Ann Rankin will offer remarks and START Founding Director Gary LaFree will moderate the panel. The authors will address the determinants of radicalization and deradicalization, and the three major ingredients of the process that turns radical beliefs into violent behaviors.

In “The Three Pillars of Radicalization,” the authors debut a new model of radicalization that identifies factors underlying the individual's quest for significance. Synthesizing varied empirical evidence, the book reinterprets prior theories of radicalization and examines major issues in deradicalization and recidivism, which will only become more relevant as communities continue to negotiate the threat of extremism.
