2024 Spring Commencement Student Speaker

Do you have a special story to share about your journey at the University of Maryland? As you prepare for life after graduation, what reflections would you like to share with your fellow graduates?


The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will select a deserving student to deliver a 4 to 5 minute speech at a 2024 BSOS Commencement Ceremony. The selected student will not only speak at one of the 2024 BSOS Commencement Ceremonies, but will also play a role in the student processional, sit onstage with Dean Susan Rivera and esteemed leadership and faculty of BSOS, and lead the graduates' turning of the tassel.

A winning speech will:

  • Emphasize experiences unique to the University of Maryland and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
  • Have a clear theme
  • Be thoughtful and well-written
  • Be delivered in 4-5 minutes

The theme of the speech is entirely up to you, but it must appeal to your fellow graduates from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences!


Eligibility

  • A GPA of 3.0 or better

  • Graduate in Winter 2023 or graduating in Spring 2024

  • Undergraduate candidates must have completed at least 60 credits at the University of Maryland, College Park.


Requirements

You will be required to answer the questions below and submit a resume/CV, contact information for two references, and a written or video copy of your proposed speech. You will also be required to answer the following questions:

  1. What is your BSOS/UMD journey?
     
  2. What have been your...
    • most memorable UMCP experiences?
    • experiences unique to BSOS?
    • goals/hope for the future?
       
  3. Why do you feel that you should be selected to be featured among your graduating class?

The deadline for submission is Monday, April 8, 2024, to be considered for this honor.
