Be The Solution Fund Challenge

In celebration of Professor John Townshend’s tenure as dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, BSOS announces a special giving challenge. As a key part of his legacy to the College, Dean Townshend would like our students, faculty, staff and alumni to continue working together to “Be The Solution” to the world’s greatest challenges. This new fund will help our students meet that goal through their studies, research and experiential learning opportunities.

The BSOS Board of Visitors has pledged $50,000 in matching gift funding to establish an endowed Be The Solution Fund. The Board challenges the BSOS community to help us raise an additional $50,000 to reach a target of $100,000!

Together with support from the Dean’s Fund, the Be The Solution Fund will create five new funding opportunities annually—scholarship support exclusively for our students—to help them Be the Solution during their time at Maryland and beyond.

These scholarship opportunities include:

  •   Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarships and Faculty Mentor Stipends
  •   Graduate Summer Research Fellowships
  •   Renewable First Year Merit Scholarships
  •   Need-Based Scholarships for BSOS Rising Seniors
  •   Be The Solution Awards for programs including study abroad, internships and extracurricular opportunities

The First Year and Senior Scholars will be known as “Townshend Scholars” in honor of Dean Townshend and his transformative impact on our College.

Join the effort by making a gift today in honor of Dean Townshend to help reach the $50,000 challenge from the Board of Visitors!
