Dr. Sunny Shin is a Professor in the School of Social Work at George Mason University. His research focuses on trauma-informed preventive interventions for youth populations; particularly, his work centers on adverse childhood experiences, youth mental and behavioral health, prevention science, and social-emotional learning (SEL). For more than two decades, Dr. Shin has worked to improve the well-being of children and families and his multiple awards, such as the Child Welfare Award from the Family and Children’s Trust Fund of Virginia, demonstrate that he is a leader in the field. Dr. Shin is exemplary in his work towards achieving positive outcomes for children and families, particularly those from marginalized communities. He has created an evidence-based SEL program. Rise Above is a Trauma-Informed, Social-Emotional Learning and Substance Use Prevention Program to help youth cultivate life skills to help them overcome and thrive. https://www.riseabovenow.org/
