United Muslim Relief Screens 'Saving Face' Documentary
UMD’s United Muslim Relief is screening Saving Face, a film about acid-attack survivors in Pakistan as part of a weeklong series of events titled “Sisters’ Week” highlighting women’s humanitarian issues around the world.
The 2011 documentary short film chronicles the lives of acid-attack survivors in Pakistan as they attempt to bring their assailants to justice and move on with their lives. Directed by American Daniel Junge and Pakistani Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, the film follows London-based Pakistani plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad as he returns to his home country to help victims of acid violence, and also features two women attacked by acid and their struggle for justice and healing. It is the first film shot in Pakistan and directed by a Pakistani to win an Oscar. The Acid Survivors Foundation of Pakistan, which is featured in the film, had documented over 100 acid attacks a year in Pakistan but estimates far more due to lack of reporting. The majority of victims are women.
