The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences community is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Sebastian Herbstein Memorial Scholarship in Fiction writing.
First Prize
Sophie Castro
Class of 2025, English

Sophie Castro is a senior English major at the University of Maryland. She is a member of the Jimenez Porter Writers' House and after graduation, she plans to pursue a Master's Degree in creative writing.
Second Prize
Ghaiesha Legrand
Class of 2024, English Literature; Class of 2026, Journalism

Ghaiesha Legrand is a recent English graduate with a minor in Creative Writing. This fall, she will start her master's degree in Broadcast Journalism at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at UMD, driven by her longstanding passion for the media. She strongly believes in the liberating power of education and is committed to lifelong learning.

The Sebastian Herbstein Memorial Scholarship in Fiction Writing was established in 2012 by Judith Freidenberg, Sebastian’s mother, a professor of anthropology at the University of Maryland. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Sebastian, a young aspiring fiction writer, a 1996 graduate of Colby College and a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, who passed away June 20, 2002. The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and University of Maryland Communities join with Professor Freidenberg in celebrating the life and honoring the memory of this talented writer, dedicated scholar, caring family member and loyal friend.
