ANTH Master's Student Helping Preserve Type Pieces Used by 1700s Annapolis Newspaper

Emma Collett, a master's degree student in the Department of Anthropology, is working for the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab to help preserve 1,100 pieces of lead printer’s type excavated from Jonas and Anne Catharine Green’s Annapolis-based news shop, which published the pro-patriot Maryland Gazette in the 1700s.  

The Greens' shop was destroyed by a fire in 1780, and the newspaper closed in 1839. It was revived decades later, however, as today's Capital Gazette.
