Bahá’í Chair Event Examines Role of Media in War and Peace

The Bahá’í Chair for World Peace wasproud to present “Capturing the Truth: Investigating the Role of Media in War & Peace” on Oct. 28 in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union.

Jon-Christopher Bua, political analyst and White House commentator, offered his thoughts on the ethical responsibility of the media in conveying objective news in politics and in times of war.

Bua is a member of the White House Correspondents’ Association and attends the White House Daily Briefings and Presidential Press Conferences. He is the author of several of political analysis blogs posted on The Huff Post UK, Talk Radio News, and Sky News. He is also an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and has designed many media and public affairs outreach programs.

This lecture explored the media’s powerful role in shaping public opinion and the importance of unbiased journalism in national and international reporting.

“The media is a mirror and should reflect the truth about events in the world,” said Dr. Hoda Mahmoudi, holder of the Bahá’í Chair. “We should ask, ‘What is the ethical responsibility of journalism in capturing the truth when it comes to matters of peace and conflict?’”

The Bahá’í Chair is a renowned academic program within the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. It uses interdisciplinary discourse to examine the way actors and institutions effect social change and transform society. The Bahá’í Chair invited students, teachers, administrators, and other attendees to discuss the approaches necessary to produce elements of journalistic excellence in terms of moral truth and impartial context in times of war and peace.

For more information on the program and on the Chair, please visit the Bahá’í Chair website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
