BSOS Alumnus Congressman Steny Hoyer Headlines Terps on the Hill
Alumni, students, faculty and University and BSOS leadership gathered in June at the Rayburn House Office Building for Terps on the Hill, an annual event celebrating members of the UMD community who work in or are connected to the government. The event gave alumni the opportunity to network and to hear about UMD updates while enjoying complimentary beverages and light fare.
The event featured remarks by President Wallace Loh and a welcome address by Congressman Steny H. Hoyer, B.A. (GVPT) ’63, who has represented the Fifth District of Maryland since 1981. Congressman Hoyer is an active and loyal Terp, who recently gave the UMD School of Public Policy commencement address on May 23.
While he was an undergraduate at Maryland, Congressman Hoyer had first planned on pursuing a business degree. However, he attended a speech on campus by then-Senator John F. Kennedy, whose speech about service and civic engagement inspired Congreesman Hoyer to pursue a degree and a career in government and politics. To celebrate this important moment in Congressman Hoyer’s life—and to recognize his service to the University—President Loh presented the congressman with framed photos of President Kennedy’s visit to campus.
Terps on the Hill 2014 was cosponsored by the UMD Alumni Association, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the College of Education, the School of Public Policy, the Robert H. Smith School of Business and the Capitol Terps Alumni Club. To learn more about upcoming alumni events, visit the Alumni Association website.
