BSOS Congratulates UMD’s NOAA Hollings Scholarship Awardees
BSOS sophomore Maya Spaur, who is majoring in Government and Politics and in Environmental Science and Technology, is among the eight UMD students to be awarded National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Scholarships for 2015.
Spaur is a member of the University Honors Program in the University Honors College and is director of governmental affairs for the Student Government Association’s Sustainability Committee. She also has served as a Fall Fellow for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. Spaur plays clarinet for the Mighty Sound of Maryland marching band.
This is the largest number of Hollings awards ever won by Maryland students; approximately 120 Hollings awards are given annually.
“Our students’ success is built on the excellence of the many major programs, living-learning programs and labs, as well as on the mentorship and support of their professors,” said Francis DuVinage, director of UMD’s National Scholarships Office and Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research.
The NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program, awarded to sophomores exclusively, provides a two-year/$8,000 per year, academic scholarship, as well as a 10-week, full-time paid internship position the summer after junior year. The NOAA internship provides the Scholars with practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management and education activities. Hollings awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and conferences where students present a paper or poster.
The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences congratulates Spaur and all of UMD’s Hollings Scholarship awardees.
