BSOS Names Herbstein Scholarship in Fiction Writing Awardees

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences congratulates junior Roseann Brown, a multiplatform journalism major and Japanese minor, on winning the 2016 Sebastian Herbstein Memorial Scholarship in Fiction Writing. BSOS also congratulates runner-up Sherin Menachery, a physiology and neurobiology major who also is pursuing a minor in creative writing.

The Sebastian Herbstein Memorial Scholarship in Fiction Writing was established in 2012 by Judith Freidenberg, Sebastian’s mother, a professor of anthropology at the University of Maryland. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Sebastian, a young aspiring fiction writer, a 1996 graduate of Colby College and a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, who passed away June 20, 2002. The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and University of Maryland Communities join with Professor Freidenberg in celebrating the life and honoring the memory of this talented writer, dedicated scholar, caring family member and loyal friend.

Brown received a prize of $600 for the award, and Menachery received $300 as the runner-up.

“I will use the award as further motivation to go after my dream of establishing a career based in writing, both creatively and journalistically. In our increasingly digitized world, we are often told that print work and all of its forms are dead,” Brown said.

Read Brown’s winning entry, “Goodfellows.”

“In composing fictional pieces and essays for my creative writing classes, I’ve become a better writer and developed better writing skills that have translated even into my professional writing assignments and science reports,” Menachery said.

Read Menachery’s second-prize entry, “Acceptance.”
