BSOS Welcomes 2014 Summer Research Initiative Scholars
On June 2, BSOS proudly welcomed its 2014 Summer Research Initiative (SRI) scholars with a special reception in McKeldin Library. There, the scholars had the opportunity to meet one another and connect with their faculty mentors and BSOS and University leadership. The reception featured remarks by BSOS alumna Dr. Kumea Shorter-Gooden, Ph.D. (PSYC) '78, UMD's inaugural chief diversity officer and associate vice president.
The SRI is part of the College's longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences. Each year, a talented and diverse group of scholars work with BSOS faculty members to gain laboratory experience that enhances their research knowledge and skills and to increase the students’ knowledge of, and interest in, doctoral-level training in the social, behavioral and economic sciences.
