BSOS Welcomes Interim Dean Wayne McIntosh
Once again, Dr. Wayne McIntosh has stepped in to serve as Interim Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, following Dr. Gregory F. Ball’s transition to becoming the new Vice President for Research. McIntosh previously held the interim position from 2013 to 2014. He has had a longstanding and distinguished career in the college.
“We are very grateful to Wayne McIntosh for agreeing to return for another tour of duty,” said Associate Dean Katherine Russell. “Wayne’s tremendous experience in college leadership and his years of effective relationship-building across campus will help ensure a very smooth transition for our college.”
McIntosh served as the Associate Dean for Graduate and Faculty Affairs from 2009 until 2021. He continued to serve as Special Assistant to the Dean from 2021 to 2022.
McIntosh joined the faculty of the Department of Government and Politics (GVPT) in 1983. His research and teaching interests lie in American political institutions, with a particular emphasis on law and courts. He served as Director of Undergraduate Programs and Associate Chair in GVPT for nearly a decade.
He was a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar Mentor, University of Maryland Faculty Mentor of the Year, and has been awarded many prizes and awards. These include the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Panhellenic Society, Lilly-CTE Teaching Fellow, and College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award.
McIntosh was also awarded the BSOS Dean's Medal in 2021; the Dean's Medal is the highest honor bestowed by the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
“If we’re lucky, we all have those professors who have a passion for the subject matter and for teaching, and who stay connected with their students. Wayne was that professor for me,” said UMD Board of Trustees Chair Paul Mandell, GVPT ’95. “Our college is tremendously lucky to once again have the benefit of Wayne’s leadership, support and wisdom during a time of transition.”
