BSOS Welcomes New Department Chairs
The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences welcomes three new full-time and interim department chairs to our leadership team.
In the Department of African American Studies, Professor Sangeetha Madhavan begins her term as chair, following a year of interim service by Professor Joseph Richardson. "Sangeetha is an extremely able administrator, having served as both acting chair for the department and as associate director of the Maryland Population Research Center in the past. I am committed to partnering with her to expand the success, influence and impact of the department," Dean Greg Ball said.
In the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Distinguished University Professor Sally Simpson will once again serve as chair in an interim capacity, as a search process begins for the full-time incumbent. Professor Gary LaFree recently finished his term as chair. "Gary has shepherded his department through faculty retirements and searches with administrative aplomb. I am grateful for his service," Ball said.
In the Department of Geographical Sciences, Professor Tatiana Loboda begins her term as chair. "Tatiana brings a new perspective and ambitious ideas to the chair position. I look forward to working with her," Ball said.
Distinguished University Professor Chris Justice is stepping down after serving for more than a decade as chair of the Department of Geographcial Sciences. "Chris has led GEOG through a period of exponential growth and great success. He has been an outstanding advocate for his department while maintaining a rigorous research portfolio, which is no small achievement," Ball said. "I thank Chris for his service to not only GEOG, but to BSOS as his experience, insight and wit made his fellow chairs, my fellow deans and myself better administrators."
