C-BERC Event Examines Corporate Misconduct

The Center for the Study of Business Ethics, Regulation and Crime (C-BERC) at the University of Maryland proudly presents a timely discussion on how to best prevent and control corporate misconduct.

"The complex relationship between corporate crime, regulation, and compliance is not well-understood in spite of the lively debates surrounding the topic. Many large, publicly held corporations have been implicated in egregious corporate wrongdoing in recent years stemming from a series of crises in corporate America," said C-BERC Director Sally S. Simpson. "In response, there have been extensive changes in the regulatory arena aimed at increasing corporate oversight while minimizing the risk of illegal activity. But, how successful are these efforts, where do they fail, and how do we know what works and what doesn’t? The purpose of this panel is to highlight what academic research and experienced regulators and business leaders can tell us about the successes and failures of different regulatory interventions. We hope this discussion will identify potential sources of collaborative engagement between academics, business, and the government."

C-BERC Presents
Regulating Business Compliance: What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why?

This topic is controversial, with different strategies and approaches generating considerable debate. One of the most commonly utilized mechanisms, government regulation, ranks among the most contentious. In this panel, we will bring together academics and representatives from the regulatory community to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the regulatory enforcement process based on empirical research and the real-life experiences of those involved in the process.
