CCJS Welcomes Interim Chair Sally Simpson

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the Department of Criminology are grateful for the continued leadership of Professor Sally Simpson, who recently took the helm of the department as interim chair.

Professor Simpson will also continue to serve as director of the Center for the Study of Business Ethics, Regulation & Crime (C-BERC), an active unit within BSOS, CCJS and the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

“As former chair of CCJS, it is an honor to step in temporarily while the department pursues a permanent leader,” Professor Simpson said. “C-BERC also has a busy year ahead, including our annual Fishlinger lecture, working with Jim Staihar as our endowed Fishlinger Scholar to build out our business ethics network, hosting post-doctoral visitors to C-BERC, and a planned conference for the spring.”

CCJS for many years has been ranked the #1 criminology graduate program in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Professor Simpson has long been affiliated with the department, and has been instrumental to its growth and stature.

Her research interests include corporate crime, criminological theory, and the intersection between gender, race, class, and crime.

Professor Simpson is a fellow of the American Society of Criminology and, in 2008, was named Distinguished Scholar by the Division on Women and Crime, American Society of Criminology. She has served as president of the Association of Doctoral Programs in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She is former chair of the Crime, Law, and Deviance Section of the American Sociological Association and past President of the White-Collar Crime Research Consortium.

Professor Simpson is a recipient of the Herbert Bloch Award from the American Society of Criminology. In 2010, she was named Woman of the Year by the President's Commission on Women's Issues at the University of Maryland. Professor Simpson won the Gilbert Geis Lifetime Achievement Award from the National White-Collar Crime Center and the White-Collar Crime Research Consortium in 2013.
