CIVICUS Leads University-Wide 9/11 Memorial
On Sept. 11, 2014, the BSOS community joined with the entire University to honor those who lost their lives—and those who emerged as heroes—in the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 by gathering at ODK Fountain on McKeldin Mall. This tradition has been annually organized by the CIVICUS Living and Learning Program, which initially brought campus together the day after the attacks.
This year’s program was led by CIVICUS alumni Dave Nelson and Sarah Jessee.
“On September 12, 2001, thousands of students, faculty and staff members of the University of Maryland descended onto McKeldin Mall in a collective demonstration of remembrance and reflection in response to the devastating events that had taken place the previous day. Eleven years later, this same community copes with the losses it suffered and its members continue to seek answers and understanding,” Nelson said.
CIVICUS is an academic citation program centered around five tenets of civil society: citizenship, leadership, community building in a diverse society, scholarship, and community service-learning. Its current students and alumni hail from diverse backgrounds and pursue a broad spectrum of interests and careers, but they are united by a dedication to serving their campus and their communities.
