Criminology’s Peter Reuter Named Winner of 2019 Stockholm Prize
An international jury awarded the 2019 Stockholm Prize in Criminology to Professor Peter Reuter, a faculty member in the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice and School of Public Policy, and to former Swiss President Ruth Dreifuss. The Stockholm Prize, established by the Swedish Ministry of Justice in 2006, is the most prestigious in criminology research and comes with an award of 1 million Swedish Kroner (roughly $110,000).
In naming him the recipient of the Stockholm Prize, the jury cited Professor Reuter’s work examining the relationship between drug policy and crime. Reuter has also made significant contributions to the study of organized crime and money laundering. A Professor of Criminology and Public Policy at UMD since 1993, Reuter has chaired a number of National Academy of Sciences panels and serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the United Nations World Drug Report. In 2007, he became the founding president of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy.
“I am particularly pleased that the Stockholm Prize in Criminology jury has chosen to highlight work that I have done with many others on understanding the effects of drug policy,” Reuter said. “The drug problem is worsening in so many Western countries, but particularly in the United States. Criminology can offer a lot of useful insights about how to reduce the problems around drug use and drug markets. I hope that this award will help encourage young scholars to pick up the challenge.”
