Distinguished University Professor Appointed to Swedish Knighthood

Distinguished University Professor Lawrence W. Sherman, from the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, has been appointed to a Swedish Knighthood by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. At a ceremony on Tuesday, June 14, the Swedish Minister of Justice, Morgan Johanson, announced the appointment recognizing Sherman for his services to Sweden in helping to establish and lead the internationally renowned Stockholm Prize in Criminology, now in its eleventh year. The King appointed Professor Sherman to the Royal Order of the Polar Star as a Commander (KNO), a distinction first conferred in 1753 on the great botanist Carl Linnaeus, the first civilian knight of the Order of the Polar Star.  

Professor Sherman holds a joint appointment with the University of Cambridge Institute of Criminology, where he is currently on leave serving as the Director of the Institute and Wolfson Professor of Criminology. Sherman’s research has advanced the application of criminology to public policy in both research literature and in partnerships with police in over 30 countries, including Australia, Uruguay, Trinidad & Tobago, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
