Dr. Gregory Ball Reappointed as BSOS Dean
Dr. Gregory Ball, who has served as Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) for the past five years, will continue to lead the College for another term. The announcement came Tuesday, June 25 from Dr. Mary Ann Rankin, Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Maryland.
The reappointment is the result of a comprehensive five-year performance review, chaired by Dr. Bonnie Thornton Dill, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities.
“(Dean Ball) is viewed as an effective manager who balances a complex workload well, allocates resources fairly, and is a successful fundraiser,” Provost Rankin noted in a memorandum to BSOS faculty and staff. “His efforts to strengthen diversity and inclusion were noted, especially the growth and improvement he has achieved in African American Studies. His good humor and affability are said to give faculty and staff comfort in approaching him with complex or troubling issues.”
Ball began his first term as dean of BSOS in 2014.
“I am very pleased to accept this reappointment,” Ball said. “My first five years have been a wonderful experience and I look forward to supporting new levels of excellence in our research activities as well as our undergraduate and graduate teaching missions in an environment that is welcoming to a diverse range of students and faculty.”
The committee’s report also addressed future challenges, such as defining a clear vision for the direction of the College and increasing its impact on campus. The report recommended that Dean Ball find ways to work with the campus to renovate and improve facilities and space for teaching and research, and to continue to focus on diversity and inclusion.
Dean Ball’s reappointment is effective July 1, 2019.
