Dr. Jeff Lucas Named BSOS Associate Dean of Research
Dr. Jeff Lucas will become the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences’ next Associate Dean of Research, effective August 23rd. In this role, Dr. Lucas will work to support all aspects of research within the College; by assisting faculty members in identifying and competing for financial research support, encouraging graduate students in the development of research projects and highlighting opportunities for more undergraduates to become involved in research within the College.
“I’m excited for Jeff to step into this leadership position and I look forward to the opportunities he will help create in continuing to position BSOS as a powerhouse in the fields of behavioral and social science research,” Dean Greg Ball said.
Dr. Lucas has been a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland since 2004. During that time, he has served as Professor, Associate Chair, Director of Graduate Studies and Director of Research for the department. Dr. Lucas has also maintained an ambitious research agenda exploring socially relevant and dynamic subject areas such as power and status, leadership, organizational behavior, social psychology and group processes. He received the College’s Excellence in Research Award for 2016.
“I’m honored to help lead the world-class researchers working within the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences,” Dr. Lucas said. “The College has built a strong reputation in the research community, and I am eager to help keep us on this upward trajectory.”
Dr. Lucas received a B.B.A. in Business Administration, M.A. in Sociology and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Iowa. He worked as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Akron for four years before joining the UMD faculty.
