Dr. Shibley Telhami Named Distinguished Scholar-Teacher

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is proud to announce that Dr. Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development, has been named a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award honors a small number of UMD faculty members annually who possess a record of outstanding scholarly accomplishment combined with demonstrated excellence in teaching.

“Recognition from colleagues is always a high honor, but it is especially so for me in this case because this university-wide award highlights the two things I particularly value: scholarship and teaching,” Dr. Telhami said. “While I think of teaching as involving first and foremost my university students, I see my mission as spreading research-based knowledge beyond the classroom, even beyond the university community, by engaging the public discourse nationally and internationally on critical issues. I am very grateful.”

In addition to serving as the Sadat Chair, Professor Telhami also teaches courses for the UMD Department of Government & Politics, is the Director of the University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll and is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Each Distinguished Scholar-Teacher awardee is invited to host a lecture for the campus community. Dr. Telhami’s lecture, entitled “The Clash of Values, at Home and Abroad,” will take place on Thursday, October 25 at 4 pm in the Atrium of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union.
