Dr. Yiqun Xie Receives Google's AI for Social Good
Award to Explore New AI Solutions to Help Vulnerable Populations
Dr. Yiqun Xie, Assistant Professor in Geospatial Information Science, received a gift award from Google to advance AI for Social Good through a new project titled "Leave No One Behind: Spatial AI Enabled Settlement Mapping to Enhance WASH Access for Vulnerable Populations." The project is in partnership with the Aquaya Institute, a nonprofit research organization dedicated to advancing global health through universal access to safe water and sanitation by knowledge from data. Kara Stuart will be Aquaya's main contact.
The project is part of the 30 new awards from Google's AI for Social Good program in 2021, with academics recognized and supported as "Impact Scholars."
Dr. Xie has an interdisciplinary background, with a Ph.D. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Geospatial Information Science. His research focuses on advancing data science and AI techniques for spatial data and related societal problems (e.g., smart cities, agriculture, public safety, public health).
