ECON Alumnus Named Secretary of MD Department of Human Resources
Maryland Governor-elect Larry Hogan named Samir "Sam" Malhotra (B.A. '81, economics) head of the state's Department of Human Resources. A devoted Terp, Mr. Malhotra is a member of the University of Maryland College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences Board of Visitors, and also is founder and CEO of Subsystem Technologies, Inc.
Arlington, Va.-based Subsystem Technologies provides support to the federal government in information technology, engineering, manufacturing, information security and enterprise program management. Since founding the company in 1997, Malhotra has grown the company into a successful business that has received many awards including the Inc. 500, Deloitte 500 and Washington Technology FAST 50.
In his new position, Malhotra will lead the state's primary social service provider, which serves over 1 million people annually. The department, through its 24 local departments of social services, aggressively pursues opportunities to assist people in economic need, provide preventive services and protect vulnerable children and adults in each of Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore City. The department's budget, which includes federal funds, stands at about $2.7 billion annually.
