HESP Chair Rochelle Newman Named an Acoustical Society Fellow
Rochelle Newman, chair of the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences and associate director of the Maryland Language Science Center, has been named a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), a membership-based organization whose mission is “to generate, disseminate, and promote the knowledge and practical applications of acoustics.”
Joining over 1,000 other professionals across industries who are active in acoustics or who have an academic degree or equivalent in acoustics or a closely related field, Newman has been a member of the ASA for nearly 30 years. From 2007-2010, she also served as an associate editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.
Only nominated members considered to be in the roughly top 10% of their chosen area of interest can become ASA fellows. Less than 50% of ASA members have demonstrated "conspicuous service or made notable contributions to the advancement, generation, promotion, or dissemination of the knowledge of acoustics or the fostering of its practical applications" and thus reached the fellowship level.
“It’s an honor,” said Newman. “I’m deeply flattered to have gotten this recognition both from my peers in the society, and also from the people who nominated me.”
Matthew Goupell, a department professor and 2021 ASA fellow recognized "for advancing understanding of binaural processing in electric and acoustic hearing," nominated Newman due to her “contributions to understanding of speech perception and language development in challenging listening conditions.”
Goupell’s fellowship was officially recognized at the ASA’s Spring 2021 meeting, and Newman’s will be officially recognized on May 25, 2022 at the ASA’s 182nd meeting in Denver, Colorado.
