HESP Spotlights National Better Hearing and Speech Month

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month but experts at the University of Maryland Hearing and Speech Clinic work every day to serve members of the community dealing with difficulties related to hearing, speech and language. Often referred to as one of the best-kept secrets at the University, the Hearing and Speech Clinic has been providing a broad array of communications disorder services to the citizens of Maryland for more than 60 years.

Did you know?

·         Approximately 40 million Americans—including both children and adults—have disorders of speech, language or hearing. UMD’s Hearing and Speech Clinic helps patients of all ages overcome difficulties caused by injury, stroke, dementia, cancer and developmental disorders.

·         Untreated hearing loss can lead a person to become isolated from friends and family members as they avoid the challenges of social situations in which they cannot hear. At the UMD Hearing and Speech Clinic, patients of all ages with hearing impairments are fitted with state-of-the-art hearing aids and trained in the use of assistive listening devices and technologies. Read moreabout the clinic’s new partnership to provide free hearing aids to low-income residents in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

·         Clinic services are provided by students working towards their Master's degrees in speech-language pathology or their Doctoral degrees in audiology who are closely supervised by experienced speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Because the clinic is a training facility, services are available at reasonable rates.

·         A specialized preschool—the Language-Learning Early-Advantage Program(LEAP)—is located within the UMD Hearing and Speech Clinic. LEAP offers a comprehensive preschool curriculum with an emphasis on communication development and individualized speech and language therapy.

·         The UMD Hearing & Speech Clinic—and all is has to offer—is conveniently located right in the heart of the College Park campus. If you or a loved one is experiencing difficulties with communication, contact the clinic for more information today. The clinic is offering free audiological screenings throughout the month of May.
