Jean McGloin Named a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology
Jean McGloin, a Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJS), was recently named a 2024 Fellow of the American Society of Criminology (ASC).
ASC Fellows are selected for their scholarly contributions to the field and distinction in the discipline.
“I am thrilled to be named an ASC Fellow and to stand beside my colleagues in CCJS who have also achieved this honor.,” said McGloin. “I am so grateful to have benefitted from a supportive department filled with remarkable scholars and exceptionally talented students.”
McGloin’s research has centered on groups and crime, specifically the part that peers can play in shaping delinquency, and various elements of co-offending—why offenders decide to commit crime with accomplices, under what conditions they will instigate group crime, and how co-offending networks can shape and influence criminal careers.
McGloin has also studied the role that gang membership can play in criminal offenders’ life trajectories.
In her prior role as the college’s Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education (2020-2024), McGloin led the organization of the 2023 and 2024 BSOS Research Showcases. These immersive events featured research presentations centered on various aspects of resilience (2023) and inequality (2024), bringing to life BSOS’ Resilience Research Hub and BSOS’ Inequality Research Hub, and allowing researchers to discuss the focus and outcome of their research directly with attendees. Attendees included UMD administrators, faculty, staff and students, as well as representatives from funding agencies (e.g., NIH, NSF, NIJ, NASA), members of the Maryland General Assembly, community groups, and many more.
McGloin has also served as a mentor in the BSOS Buddies Program—a program that pairs Ph.D. candidates in BSOS with faculty members to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities in academia.
“I consider Dr. Jean McGloin a once-in-a-lifetime scholar in that she does everything exceptionally well—research, teaching, and service. In addition, she is widely known as a generous, kind, and thoughtful mentor to early career scholars, especially women,” said CCJS Professor and Chair Rod K. Brunson. “For the past two decades, Jean has been a pillar in our department and her impressive body of work exemplifies our premiere publishing standards. Along with her CCJS colleagues, I am thrilled to celebrate Dr. McGloin's richly deserved, milestone achievement.”
McGloin and the other 2024 ASC Fellows will be recognized at the ASC’s annual meeting in San Francisco, California this November.
