Legislative Advocacy Day Promotes Literacy Education
On Feb. 14, the Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity (MILE) program hosted a multi-institutional Legislative Advocacy Day in Annapolis. The event’s theme, “For the Love of Children,” centered on issues related to literacy education across the state.
Faculty members from several units within the University of Maryland, including the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences (HESP), joined with faculty from Morgan State University to meet with lawmakers to discuss the needs of individuals and communities, as well as possible strategies and solutions.
Assistant Professor José Ortiz met with delegates Emily Shetty and Aaron Kaufman to talk about some of the MILE policy priorities, including equitable access to literacy education and funding the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to give voice to the range of challenges related to literacy that children in our communities face,” Ortiz said.
