Maryland Democracy Initiative Receives Two $100,000 Gifts
The Maryland Democracy Initiative (MDI)—a nonpartisan interdisciplinary program that combines research, teaching and learning, and civic engagement to create a more just society—recently received two $100,000 gifts from Marsha Laufer ’64 and her husband, Henry.
MDI—of which Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement Director Michael Hanmer and Antoine Banks, Department of Government and Politics Professor and Chair, are a part—will use the funds to support its voter mobilization efforts, as well as the newly established Laufer Democracy Internship. The Laufer Democracy Internship will provide 18 rising UMD sophomores, juniors and seniors with paid, full-time placements at nonprofits dedicated to voter education and mobilization at colleges and schools.
