In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus Roger Warren McIntire
The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) joins with the Department of Psychology (PSYC) and the entire university community in mourning the loss of Professor Emeritus Roger Warren McIntire, who passed away on November 23, 2024 at the age of 89.
McIntire was a part of the PSYC faculty for 32 years, serving first as a professor, and later as an associate dean.
"Dr. McIntire will be sorely missed by the psychology department here at UMD and across the broader community,” said Michael Dougherty, PSYC professor and chair. “Dr. McIntire joined the department at a pivotal time, and helped shape it into what it is today. We are grateful for his many contributions."
A recipient of BSOS’ Excellence in Teaching Award, McIntire mentored more than 50 Ph.D. candidates, and lectured more than 13,000 students on topics such as including behavioral modification, psychotherapy, and family and couples counseling during this time at UMD.
Those topics, among numerous others, were discussed in the many books that McIntire authored, including "For Love of Children: Behavioral Psychology for Parents"; "Losing Control of Your Teenager"; :Teenagers and Parents: 10 Steps for a Better Relationship"; "Raising Good Kids in Tough Times"; "Enjoy Successful Parenting" and more.
McIntire shared related resources in columns entitled “Strategies” in T.E.A.M. (The Early Adolescent Magazine), in Martinsburg, West Virginia’s The Journal, and on his blog, RogerMcIntire.Wordpress.com. He also shared his expertise with the world as a therapist, a consultant to school systems, and by leading parent and teacher counseling programs that focused on common problems of families, children, and teenagers.
McIntire was involved in multiple professional organizations throughout the course of his career, too. He was a long-time member of the the College Park Behavior Group; the Association for Behavior Analysis International; the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies; and the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis, which presented him with its award for “Effective Presentation of Behavior Analysis in the Mass Media” in 2001.
Outside of the classroom, McIntire was an avid soccer fan, coach, player, and referee; a private pilot in his Cessna 172; a sailor, scuba diver, and traveler; a long time member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia; and a father himself.
McIntire is survived by his wife of 32 years, Eileen (Haavik) McIntire; four daughters, Pam McIntire (spouse Greg Townsend), Jennifer Madden (spouse Chris), Donna Byrd (spouse Lewis), and Lorien (Davis) Haavik; two grandsons, Duncan Townsend and Damon McIntire (spouse Caroline Balling); his sister-in-law Carrol McIntire; his nephews Chris McIntire (spouse Ellie), Brent McIntire, and Todd McIntire (spouse Susan); and his niece Lisa Shaw (spouse Lynn). He was predeceased by his first wife, Caroline Fowler McIntire; his brother, Clifton McIntire Jr.; and his parents, Clifton McIntire and Ellen (Weiler) McIntire.
A memorial service honoring McIntire will be held on January 18, at 3:30 p.m. at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center: 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, MD 21045.
