Michele Gelfand Elected as a Member of the National Academy of Sciences

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences congratulates Professor Michele Gelfand of the Department of Psychology, who was recently elected as a Member of the National Academy of Sciences.

“I’m deeply honored to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and am so grateful to all of my students and colleagues who have been a source of support and inspiration for many years,” Gelfand said.

Gelfand was recognized for her distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. She is known for many innovative projects, including her theories on “tight” and “loose” cultures, as described in her groundbreaking book, “Rule Makers, Rule Breakers: How Tight and Loose Cultures Wire Our World.”

"It is entirely appropriate that Dr. Gelfand be recognized with this honor. Her pathbreaking research has been impactful around the world," said Dean Greg Ball.

Gelfand also focuses on cultural influences on conflict, negotiation, justice, and revenge; workplace diversity and discrimination; and theory and methods in cross-cultural psychology. Her work has been published in top outlets such as Science and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“This is such an honor for Michele. We’re extremely proud of her accomplishments, and are proud to have her as a Terp,” said Professor Michael Dougherty, chair of the department.

Gelfand also holds an affiliate appointment in the Robert H. School of Business, and is a Distinguished University Professor.
