Professor Harley Featured in Upcoming Documentary
Professor Sharon Harley of the Department of African American Studies will be featured in the upcoming documentary "Odessa's Reign," an exploration of the fascinating Odessa Marie Madre, whom the filmmakers call "a Black female gangster" who ran the most lucrative gambling ring in D.C. in the 1950s, and managed to keep the D.C. police in her back pocket.
Professor Harley's role in the film as an historical commentator draws on her often-cited article, "Working for Nothing but for a Living: Black Women in the Underground Economy," which appears in Sister Circle: Black Women and Work (2002).
