Professor Harley on the Legacy of Nannie Helen Burroughs
Professor Sharon Harley of the Department of African American Studies was recently quoted in The Washington Post about the legacy of Nannie Helen Burroughs. Burroughs, who was deemed "too Black" to be hired as an educator in the 1890s, went on to found her own school, and to forge a celebrated career as an educator, activist, religious leader, and an orator.
