Professor William Reed Named as Chair of GVPT

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences congratulates Professor William Reed on his appointment as Chair of the Department of Government and Politics.

In 2009, Professor Reed joined the Department and is also affiliated with the Center for International Development and Conflict (CIDCM). He teaches courses on international relations, foreign policy, and applied game theory and regression analysis.

“Professor Reed is a tremendously talented and respected colleague and scholar. I am confident that he will lead the Department to even greater heights of achievement, collaboration and renown,” said Dean Gregory F. Ball. “I am also grateful to Professor Margaret Pearson, who has admirably served as Interim Chair during the past few months of transition.”

Professor Reed studies the onset, duration, and termination of international and civil conflict. His work appears in the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, and the Journal of Politics. Several of his articles evaluate models of bargaining between actors such as states and rebel groups.

In addition to his service to the Department and to CIDCM, Professor Reed is a UMD ADVANCE Leadership Fellow. He served as the International Relations Field Editor of the Journal of Politics from 2015 to 2019.

“I am pleased and excited to step into this role,” Professor Reed said. “My colleagues in the Department and in CIDCM are doing exciting work and teaching a magnificent cohort of undergraduate and graduate students. Our alumni are engaged and active, and I look forward to connecting with each member of our community.”

Previously, Professor Reed was an associate professor at Rice University (2005-2009); a faculty member at the University of Houston’s Center for Public Policy (2006-2010); a Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan (2002); an assistant professor at Michigan State University (1999-2002), and a visiting assistant professor at SUNY Buffalo (1998).

Professor Reed earned a B.A. from Emory University in 1992; an M.A. from Florida State University in 1996, and a Ph.D. from Florida State in 1998.
