Remembering Dr. Gerald McCall
Dr. Gerald N. McCall, a cherished colleague and friend in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, died at home on Nov. 18.
His was a long and distinguished career in speech pathology. Dr. McCall received his doctorate from Northwestern University, then worked in the medical centers of Louisiana State University and the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.
He served in the Department Hearing and Speech Sciences for 27 years, including many years as the chair of the department and as the director of graduate studies. He helped to establish the UMD Hearing and Speech Clinic.
“Dr. McCall’s legacy of community-building, service and love of teaching will continue through the Clinic and through the many students he taught and the colleagues he inspired,” said Professor and Chair Rochelle Newman. “The Clinic that he helped to establish has served countless people throughout the state of Maryland, and here on our campus.”
According to family and friends, Dr. McCall loved teaching numerous students over the years, and he loved being a Terp.
“He encouraged me to follow my heart,” said Christopher K. Zalewski, an adjunct faculty member. “He was and remains a special man to everyone he came in contact with.”

Family and friends have asked that those wishing to make remembrances in honor of Dr. McCall would consider contributing to the University of Maryland Hearing and Speech Sciences Student Research Fund.
