Remembering Maryland State Senator Mike Miller
On Jan. 15, noted UMD alumnus Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., the nation’s longest-serving president of a state Senate, died at home at the age of 78. He was known as a pillar of Maryland government, well-respected for his longstanding service. He was the Maryland Senate’s president for 33 years, stepping down in 2019; he retained his seat as a member until Dec. 23, 2020, when he resigned.
“As a new American president starts his tenure, we should remember and learn from Senator Miller, who was a great pragmatist and worked across the aisle throughout his career to get things done. He made politics more equitable and the state of Maryland a better place,” said Associate Professor of Government and Politics Stella Rouse, director of UMD’s Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement.
In June of 2020, the university’s Main Administration Building was renamed as the Thomas V. Miller, Jr. Administration Building.
Miller graduated from the University of Maryland in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a law degree in 1967.
"Senator Miller, a proud Terp, will be greatly missed. His exceptional and historic leadership as President of the Maryland Senate and his positive influence through Maryland has had no equal," said Judge Alexander Williams Jr., director of the Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. Center for Education, Justice and Ethics.
