Scholars, Mentors Celebrate Summer Research Initiative Welcome Reception
Scholars and faculty mentors joined with campus leadership to celebrate the start of the 2023 Summer Research Initiative (SRI) on June 5 in H.J. Patterson Hall. This event was especially momentous, as the SRI celebrates its 25th anniversary this summer.
In his welcoming remarks SRI Director Kim Nickerson, the college's Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, reflected on the program's longstanding success in building a pipeline of diverse scholars in graduate education and in academic careers.
The SRI was created in 1999 by the Office of the Dean in BSOS. The program is designed to encourage and enhance the diversity of scholars working in the social and behavioral science fields. The program provides rising juniors and seniors with an 8-week intensive experience to develop research skills, learn about doctoral training, and increase graduate training readiness.
"Many of our SRI alumni have gone on to successful careers as faculty members at distinguished universities. And many of them keep in touch with me to tell them how much this program was foundational to their careers," Nickerson said. "The SRI has nurtured hundreds of scholars, even during the pandemic. We are excited to have all of you on our campus this summer to celebrate our 25th anniversary."
Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Georgina Dodge welcomed the 2023 cohort and praised the program's mentors, noting that summer research activities significantly guided her own career.
"I encourage you all to take a deep dive into the topics you care about, and make the most of the faculty connections you will make," Dodge said.
