Supporting Those Affected by the Invasion on Ukraine
Knowing I speak for our entire community, I want to offer my support to our students, alumni, faculty, staff and collaborators here in College Park, the United States, and all over the world who have been impacted by the attack on Ukraine.
BSOS is a global college embedded within a global university. We are united in our efforts across disciplines to face the world’s great challenges, in hopes of building stronger communities, promoting peace, and creating the best possible future for every person.
Our scholars conduct research that has shown, time and again, that conflict and war in any region affects the entire world–creating humanitarian crises, food insecurity, environmental destruction, diplomatic tensions, and physical and mental health problems. Thus, we hope and will continue to work for peace and for stability in Ukraine, in surrounding regions, and all over the world.
We are greatly distressed by this invasion, and recognize the impact it is having directly on the people of Ukraine and nearby regions. We also know that those of us whose family, friends and colleagues are in harm’s way are suffering and may be in need of support. This international crisis leaves many of us feeling stressed and uncertain, exacerbating the anxiety that many of us have already experienced during the pandemic and other times of hardship.
I join President Pines in commending to you the support of: the International Student and Scholar Services at isss_inquiry@umd.edu; the Faculty Staff Assistance Program; the Division of Student Affairs at vpsa@umd.edu; and the University Counseling Center at 301-314-7651 (this number is also available after-hours as a crisis support line). Read the full message from President Pines.
Please be in touch with me or with leadership in your department or unit if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions or requests for assistance. We will meet this moment together, TerrapinSTRONG.
