Two BSOS Faculty Win Provost’s Excellence Award

Two members of the BSOS faculty—Clinical Assistant Professor Eusebia Mont in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, and Research Associate Professor Peter Potapov in the Department of Geographical Sciences—were selected to receive the Provost’s Excellence Award for Professional Track Faculty.

The awards were established in 2015 to recognize the contributions of professional track faculty on campus. Winners receive a letter of recognition from the provost and a $1,000 award in recognition of consistently excellent contributions in one of the three core areas of academic activity.

“Service plays an important role in academic life—it often means collaboration and teamwork. This award celebrates work that has a broad-reaching impact. To win this award means so much to me; I am proud to be a part of something larger than individual accomplishments, I serve my department, profession and community,” Mont said.

Mont is the Director of the Cultural-Linguistic Diversity Emphasis Program and leader of the Accent Modification Program. Her clinical interests include communication across the lifespan with an emphasis on language development in children and dementia-related communication disorders. Mont’s interests also include infusing cultural competence into clinical education and culturally responsive service delivery in speech-language pathology.

“Eusebia is particularly worthy of this award because she is the cornerstone of several initiatives intended to increase diversity in our department, including being the co-founder and director of our new M.A. track in Cultural and Linguistic Diversity. This is a groundbreaking initiative focused on increasing diversity within the field of speech-language pathology and training the next generation of professionals to provide culturally competent services,” said Professor Rochelle Newman, chair of the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences.

Potapov’s primary research interest is assessing and monitoring forest extent, structure, and composition on national to global extent using open satellite data archives. He is the Co-Director of UMD’s Global Land Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) Laboratory.

“It is a great pleasure for me to be working for the department and the university. I believe that my research, teaching, and capacity-building activities increase awareness of global environmental change and building the tools for sustainable development and preservation of intact ecosystems. I appreciate the great help from the University and the Department to my work,” Potapov said.

“Peter is an outstanding scientist, and this award is most well-deserved. He is a great collaborator and is very successful at securing external funding for his research. He has built an excellent international reputation, and has been instrumental in developing the GLAD group. He makes a significant contribution to our Department, advising and mentoring graduate students and teaching classes. He also finds time for training junior international scientists in the latest satellite monitoring methods. It’s great to see this truly excellent member of our PTK Faculty being recognized by the campus for his contribution,” said Professor Chris Justice, Chair of the Department of Geographical Sciences.

Congratulations to these outstanding faculty members, and to their departments!
