The late Congressman Parren Mitchell was the first African American man to receive a graduate degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and its Department of Sociology are honored to count him among our distinguished alumni. Watch the video about Congressman Mitchell’s life and legacy.

On April 28, the Critical Race Initiative, the Department of Sociology, the African American Studies Department, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and CRGE presented the 2nd Annual Congressman Parren Mitchell Symposium: "Intellectual Activism, Social Justice, & Criminalization" in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union.
