Wayne McIntosh Awarded BSOS Dean’s Medal
For 38 years, Dr. Wayne McIntosh has served the University of Maryland as an outstanding scholar, educator and leader. Faculty, staff, alumni and friends paid tribute to Dr. McIntosh on Oct. 7 at a reception at The Hotel at the University of Maryland. Following remarks by Dean Ball and by Board of Trustees President Paul Mandell, GVPT ’95, Dr. McIntosh was presented with the Dean’s Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, in recognition of his talent and dedication.
From 2009 to 2020, Dr. McIntosh served as associate dean for graduate education and faculty affairs, and also was interim dean of the college. He now serves as special assistant to the dean.
“Wayne has had a long and distinguished career at Maryland as a teacher, scholar, and administrator, as well as a mentor. His leadership, his generosity, and his humor are cherished by our community. He is entirely deserving of the Dean’s Medal, our college’s highest honor,” Dean Ball said.
Dr. McIntosh served as a professor in the Department of Government and Politics, and was also the department’s associate chair and its director of undergraduate programs. His research and teaching interests lie in American political institutions, with a particular emphasis on law and courts.
Dr. McIntosh has been recognized several times for outstanding teaching and mentorship. In addition, he has successfully competed for external funding, with two multi-year grants awarded by the National Science Foundation. His most recent book, “Property Rights and Neo-liberalism: Cultural Demands and Legal Actions,” co-edited with Laura Hatcher, was published in 2010.
“Receiving the Dean’s Medal is an unexpected honor,” Dr. McIntosh said. “It has been my honor to work with so many amazing people in our college over the years. Many thanks to Dean Ball, and many thanks to the college!”
At the ceremony, Mr. Mandell gave moving remarks about his mentor.
“If we’re lucky, we all have those professors who have a passion for the subject matter and for teaching, and who stay connected with their students. Wayne was that professor for me,” Mandell said.
Mandell—a longtime supporter of BSOS and of UMD—established the Wayne V. McIntosh Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship in Government and Politics.
“It is very fitting that students will be supported by Wayne’s legacy for generations to come,” Mandell said.
