ABOUT THE TALK

"The Greatest Economy” with Douglas Meade

Since the end of the Great Recession in June 2009, the U.S. has enjoyed 41 quarters of economic expansion.  Since the depth of the stock market decline of March 2009, the value of the S&P 500 has nearly tripled.  According to the latest jobs report, the unemployment rate has declined to 3.5 percent, the lowest in 50 years. It has been said: “In many ways this is the greatest economy in the HISTORY of America”.

Join us for the next installment of our Be Informed: Lectures and Libations series, where you’ll hear from our guest presenter, Dr. Douglas Meade, Director of Inforum. Doug will review the current state of the U.S. economy, and provide food for thinking on where the economy is heading.  The talk will be non-technical and we welcome questions!

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Douglas S. Meade is Director of Research of Inforum, which tracks the US and other economies using detailed industry macroeconomic models, which make projections in a “bottom up” way, deriving the macroeconomic projections as an aggregate of what’s happening in the various industries. Inforum is an organization dedicated to improving business planning, government policy analysis, and the general understanding of the economic environment. Inforum is affiliated with the University of Maryland, and is located near the College Park campus. Subscribers to the Inforum models and software include several federal government agencies, trade associations and public interest groups, as well as consulting firms and private corporations.

Dr. Meade has served in his current position since May, 2006. He is responsible for new model development (U.S. and some international), as well as expanding and improving the existing econometric models at Inforum, and either directing or participating in numerous consulting projects particularly those with a focus on energy and environmental issues.

Dr. Meade was formerly Deputy Chief of the Industry Division at the Bureau of Economic Analysis. His areas of research interest include econometrics, energy policy, defense economics, input-output and national income accounting. Dr. Meade holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, 1990.
