GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • Date & Location: May 4, 2024 at the Universities of Shady Grove Campus

  • Attendees: Montgomery County Public School Students grades 8-12.

AGENDA/ SCHEDULE:

  • 9am– Registration and breakfast

  • 9:30am– Keynote speaker

  • 10am— Session #1: Overview/ Data & Statistics

    • Presentation from the University of Maryland Prevent Gun Violence: Research, Empowerment, Strategies and Solutions (PROGRESS) & information from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions

  • 10:30am– Session #2: Conflict Resolution Techniques

    • Presentation from the Montgomery County Circuit Court Juvenile Division team that has a formalized training program on Conflict Resolution Skills for youth.

  • 11am—Session #3: Mental health

    • Presentation from Identity & EveryMind

    • Resource table provided by the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Officer

  • 12pm– Lunch

    • Youth will split into groups for group brainstorming with conversation questions.

  • 1pm– Session #4– Police presentation/ Court presentation

    • Presentation from the Montgomery County Police Department (Captain Nick Picerno) & Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office or Montgomery County Circuit Court Juvenile Division

  • 2pm– Session #5-- Medical presentation

    • Presentation from University of Maryland Medical Center Violence Prevention Program—Stop the Bleed training

  • 3pm– Session #6– Victim Impact Panel

    • Coordination with Brady United Montgomery County Chapter, MoCo Students 4 Change, Guns Down Friday, and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (Child Youth and Family Services: Positive Youth Development Division)

  • 4pm– Discussion Time (action plan/ pledge) / Closing remarks

    • Youth will write down a pledge/ commitment regarding how they will stop youth gun violence.
