Prevent Gun Violence: Research, Empowerment, Strategies & Solutions (PROGRESS)
Visit by Butler Montessori School Students to the University of Maryland and PROGRESS
April 7th, 2026
The University of Maryland PROGRESS team was honored to host high school students from Butler Montessori School for a day of learning and dialogue on gun violence prevention. The students presented their gun violence research projects to the PROGRESS co-directors and other PROGRESS team members. The students also engaged in thoughtful discussion about the impact of gun violence in schools and communities, the psychosocial and policy factors that shape gun violence, and comparisons between the United States and other industrialized countries.
The high school students also had a chance to experience college life with lunch at a UMD dining hall and a guided tour of campus. PROGRESS is inspired by the next generation’s commitment to building safer communities and looks forward to continued collaboration.
