Inaugural PROGRESS Workshop on Design Justice
September 16th, 2024
The Prevent Gun Violence: Research, Empowerment, Strategies & Solutions (PROGRESS) initiative held a workshop/dialogue focusing on design justice principles at the University of Maryland. This convening brought together a group of scholars, community-based organization (CBO) representatives, policymakers, students, and other stakeholders to discuss and evaluate principles for sustainable and equitable university-community research partnerships.
The workshop featured three lively sessions focused on critical themes:
“Design Justice and Gun Violence Prevention Research”
- Speakers: Gregory Ball (UMD & UMB Vice President for Research), Tyrique Glascow (Young Chances Foundation), Tania Mitchell (UMD Associate Provost for Community Engagement), Sara Solomon (Penn Injury Science Center).
“Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Community-Engaged Research”
- Speakers: Brooklyn Hitchens (UMD Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice), Jawanna Hardy (Guns Down Friday), and Bahiyyah Muhammad (Howard University Department of Sociology and Anthropology).
"Community Perspectives on Community-Engaged Research"
- Speakers: Capt. Thomas Boone (Prince George's County Police), Jarriel Jordan (Jacob's Ladder Youth Foundation), Meredith Kleykamp (BSOS Associate Dean), and Timmeka Perkins (Annie E. Casey Foundation), Terrance Staley (Alliance of Concerned Men).
Each session included a Q&A moderated by PROGRESS Co-Directors Jo Richardson and Woodie Kessel.
The series of PROGRESS dialogues/workshops will continue with later convenings to build on the insights gained during the inaugural workshop and further the dialogue on equitable research practices.
