Prevent Gun Violence: Research, Empowerment, Strategies & Solutions (PROGRESS)
PROGRESS Fall 2025 Teach-In: Uniting Students to Discuss Gun Violence Impact on Students and Prevention Strategies and Solutions
December 8th, 2025
PROGRESS proudly hosted its second student Teach-In on December 8th. Planned, organized, and led by students, the Teach-In featured engaging and thought-provoking conversations about gun violence in the United States and gathered perspectives on different experiences and solutions to gun violence.
PROGRESS teach-ins provide UMD students with opportunities to plan, organize, participate in, and lead a dialogue and exchange of views on salient issues pertaining to gun violence, including: impacts on society in general and youth and students in particular, and mitigation and prevention strategies and solutions.
To date, topics touched on during the series of teach-ins have included:
- What is the best way for students to get involved in gun violence prevention activities and research?
- How can we coordinate efforts among university-based actors and community-based organizations to reduce gun violence and save lives?
- How is gun violence being addressed by various research disciplines on campus (i.e. Education, Health, Family Science, Criminology, etc.)?
Teach-ins are open forums in which broad participation by campus groups working toward violence reduction is strongly encouraged. PROGRESS and our student teach-in coordinators have been honored to welcome representatives from these leading campus organizations:
- Black Health Research Lab
- UMD Students Demand Action
- UMD Violence Reduction Center
- xFoundry
